Scan to Word

Turn scans and photos into an editable Word document.

When to use it

Use it to edit a document you only have on paper or as a photo, instead of typing it again.

How it works

  1. Choose your files, or drop them onto the box above. You can add several at once.
  2. Add scans or photos, choose the language and run. Each recognised paragraph becomes a Word paragraph.
  3. Press the Create Word file button.
  4. Download the result, or add a next step without downloading.

Where your file goes

This tool runs in your browser: the file is processed on your device and is not uploaded. The Network tab of your browser's developer tools shows this.

On first use, your browser downloads the code this tool needs from this site. Your file is not sent anywhere.

What is kept, and what is not

Text and paragraph direction are kept, so Arabic and Urdu paragraphs open right-to-left. Fonts, columns and images are not reproduced.

Limits

  • Fonts, columns and pictures are not reproduced, so a layout with several columns needs tidying after conversion.
  • Files up to 512 MB each.
  • PDF documents up to 5,000 pages.
  • Images up to 100 megapixels.
  • The work happens in your device's memory, so a phone may fail on a file that a computer handles.

If something goes wrong

Paragraphs are split in odd places

Each paragraph the engine recognises becomes one Word paragraph. A clearer scan, or the accurate quality setting, gives better paragraphs.

The PDF asks for a password

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF (you need to know it), then try again.

The page becomes slow with a very large file

Close other tabs, or use a computer instead of a phone.

My file is not accepted

Check the formats listed above. A damaged file, or one with the wrong extension, is refused with a message saying why.

Questions

What is the difference from PDF to Word?

PDF to Word converts PDFs that already contain text. This tool reads scans and photos, which contain only pictures of text.

Do Arabic and Urdu paragraphs read right to left?

Yes. The direction of each paragraph is kept, so right-to-left text opens correctly in Word.

The result can go straight into another tool on this page, without downloading it and uploading it again:
