Excel to CSV

Export a sheet as CSV that opens correctly in Excel in your language.

When to use it

Use it to load spreadsheet data into a database, an online shop, a mailing list or any program that imports CSV.

How it works

  1. Choose your files, or drop them onto the box above. You can add several at once.
  2. Choose which sheets and which separator. By default the separator matches your language, so Excel opens the file in columns.
  3. Press the Export CSV button.
  4. Download the result, or add a next step without downloading.

Supported formats

Input
XLSX, XLSM, CSV
Output
CSV
Files
One or several; each file is processed on its own

Several results can be downloaded one by one or together as a ZIP.

Where your file goes

This tool runs in your browser: the file is processed on your device and is not uploaded. The Network tab of your browser's developer tools shows this.

On first use, your browser downloads the code this tool needs from this site. Your file is not sent anywhere.

What is kept, and what is not

Values are kept; formatting cannot exist in CSV. Cells starting with = + - or @ are protected so they cannot run as formulas.

Limits

  • CSV holds values only, so formatting, colours and formulas are not kept.
  • Files up to 512 MB each.
  • The work happens in your device's memory, so a phone may fail on a file that a computer handles.

If something goes wrong

Excel opens the CSV in a single column

The separator does not match your Excel settings. Choose semicolon or comma explicitly and export again.

The page becomes slow with a very large file

Close other tabs, or use a computer instead of a phone.

My file is not accepted

Check the formats listed above. A damaged file, or one with the wrong extension, is refused with a message saying why.

Questions

Why are some cells changed to start with an apostrophe?

Cells starting with =, +, - or @ are protected so they cannot run as formulas when the file is opened.

Do letters such as ü, ş or Arabic text survive?

Yes. The file is UTF-8, and the BOM option helps Excel recognise it.
